Welling is limited, but Kreuk was absolute plastic for a couple of seasons early on.

I find it telling and depressing that Kristen Bell (who later starred in Veronica Mars and showed she had decent chops in Spartan) tried out for the part of Chloe and didn't get it. Sam Jones III can attest to the abysmal nature of the writing on the show--as he was exiled to product placement duty.

Just about the only actor they didn't misuse/abuse in this entire process is John Glover because he can make phone directory recitation powerful--he ended up validating just about every crazy place they took his character through the sheer force of his own will.
Ah, that's just terrible what has happened on that show. They shouldn't even be allowed to get away with what they have done. Yea he was/and still is one HECK of a good actor and he did a good job with what he had to work with. He was one of the reasons why I was a fan of the show in the first place. He brought some real nuance to his character.

Total agreement.

Wasn't that an appalling episode! I don't think I've even seen an entire episode used for such blatant product placement.

Yea, that's a true shame to see something like that on a tv show... I really hate to see that kind of thing . It really shows just how little a show can care about its characters at times.

Re: Smallville

The sad thing is, even though the Krypto-Stride thing was an abysmal episode, it was actually better and more nuanced than half the stuff Jones did as a regular on the show.

Re: Smallville

That's so true! Maybe it was his time off doing other things that honed his acting ability. Or maybe it was just that we missed him and then when he came back, it was just so nice to see him, product placement or not, that he seemed even more fabulous than usual.
As for season 8, I'm ready to get back to seeing Clark be Clark and not a love sick lap dog. Get out from Lana's shadow and get some backbone again! He's got to go out with a bang, or all the dedicated fans who have struggled with the show's writing will be enraged and bury the writers in pencils! (I'll explain the whole pencil thing if you don't understand)

Re: Smallville

Something to do with that weird Jericho campaign last year? Not only does he need to go out with a bang that makes us believe he'll grow into the Superman we admire, Chloe needs a happy ending away from the Planet--a fulfilling relationship with an intellectual and emotional equal and a serious role in the Justice League--and that's the bare minimum.

Re: Smallville

The pencils thing was from the writers strike. Al & Myles asked all Smallville fans to send the network executives pencils to try to help speed things along and to let them know the seriousness of the fans. They ended up getting around 700,000 pencils.

Yes, Chloe needs to have her day in the sun as well. I do doubt that she'll end up with Mr. Right-for-Chloe, but a role in the JL and just finally being happy is a must. Hmm....maybe we should just start emailing the writers about all this....

Re: Smallville

What good would it do--back when they checked the Smallville site and allowed for fan input, I used to e-mail in "man in the street" comments all the time (mostly on the Smallville Ledger section of the show site). I even got a form e-mail that they wanted my input on the site redesign--must have been three/four years ago now.

Re: Smallville

At least I have something good to watch on Tuesdays now S7 premieres on Tuesday.

Fortunately, I caught the last few minutes of the finale, so I actually have some inkling of a clue as to what the heck is going on for once.

Re: Smallville

Don't worry, it'll lose its coherence soon--this IS Smallville after all. by the way--could I just interject to ask a sig question? Who is that, the hairstyle reminds me of a couple characters on Step Up, but I can't place her.

Re: Smallville

She's from Dr. Who. Big fan favourite.

OK, so I have a question. After having seen the finale, are we supposed to understand that Lex now has control over Clark? And if so, how in the heck is that going to work with Rosenbaum not returning next season?
I am very confused...

Re: Smallville

I don't think that Lex got control over Clark, but then with a missing Lex and a robot Clark on the loose with no master, that might be a fun mix up. But they'll probably so something boring like have Clark come out just fine with Lex missing, brush himself off and go home to save Chloe. But maybe the exploded Fortress will unleash the new villain. All I know is that whatever happens to Clark will probably be worked out by the end of the first episode. That's the Smallville style. Unless they actually take a risk, like with season 3 and the Red Kryptonite and have Clark do something exciting. Now that would be nice!

Re: Smallville

I just can't see how they're going to do it without Rosenbaum being in at least the first episode of next season. The implication was that Lex had activated the device, and that he would/did have control over Clark. We just didn't see the effect of it after it was turned on.
I'm really curious as to how they're going to solve it. But then, as you said, it usually ends up being very simple.

I have always wondered how it is that Jor-El could have so much power being just a memory in a fortress. He has a pretty long reach for someone who's been dead for 18 years. And can exert a whole lot of control/power for someone who is deceased. I'd like for them to explain how he has power whilst being thoroughly dead. To me it's sort of nonsensical. But then, that's Smallville.

I didn't actually get to see the finale. I did hear all about it though and am also curious how they are going to resolve the issues with Rosenbaum/Lex for next season. It is going to be a bit of a letdown if he isn't seen at all. The rumor was he would guest star in a few episodes now I am hearing he may not be in any. This is why they have brought Doomsday on board but I am still feeling nervous about season 8. Lex has been there the entire time and they have built his character up so much. His relationship with Clark was imo what kept the show interesting.

Re: Smallville

OK, so I'm confused. Why didn't Clark tell Lex about Brainiac when Lex asked Clark if he knew what had happened to Lana??? Lex knew about Milton Fine -- he was researching him and figured out that he was an alien robot like 2 seasons ago! Clark wouldn't have been giving away any secrets to mention that Fine had attacked Lana and then disappeared.

*sigh*

I wish the writers of this show would pay attention to their own storylines. lol. It's like they don't want Clark to ever tell the truth if he can avoid it.

Well that device is susposed to control Clark, but Lex was intent on destroying him. So i guess it'll go pearshaped for Lex cos he's used the device in the wrong way (who will most likely loose his memories, get convicted of some crime and be put behind bars). That would be the simple solution.

As for Jor-El he is an alien with advanced technology, thus what he is able to do things that would otherwise be impossible or described as magic by the smallville locals. He put a lot of thought into saving Clark and getting him ready for the work he has yet to face i.e. Becoming Superman. Jor-El will have been dead for a lot longer than 18 years, given the distance between Earth and Krypton.

Re: Smallville

He'll probably just have Smallville amnesia and be missing for a year. So, no--Lex doesn't have control over Clark. He tried to use the purple K to kill him and instead destroyed the Fortress (presumably temporarily). Paging ComicBookWorm--what does purple kryptonite do in other continua? Does it even exist elsewhere?

No kidding! What colors have we had so far? Green, Red, Blue, Black, Silver--oh wait. Silver was just Braniac, right?

Re: Smallville

There's no real purple krypto. There was a fake one, that made Krypto the Superdog chase his tail but no real krypto. There was, however a pink one, though.

Re: Smallville

I believe there was silver kryptonite on Smallville (albeit brought onto the scene by Brainiac). When Clark came in contact with it he went crazy.

I'll have to watch *** finale again. I totally missed the purple kryptonite thing. To be honest, I couldn't tell what was happening (why Clark wasn't fighting back at all) when everything started crumbling.
Colour me confused!
