OK, I give up. How do you get those ultra-bright colours?
I've tried to copy your style by using the levels to throw up the contrast as far as possible. Then I discovered that putting a coloured layer over an image and setting it to 'colour burn' can brighten the image. But still my graphics don't look as good as yours. Please... what is the secret?

Well basically, I duplicate the base layer a few times, set one or two to screen, then one to either overlay or soft light, then for most of that set I messed around with the colour balance by making a new adjustment layer (layers>>new adjustment layer>>colour balance) and tweaked them - in this set I set them to a low magenta and cyan setting, and lowered the yellow values a little, though it varied from icon to icon. After that, I sometimes add an exclusion layer, a tan layer set to multiply and another set to burn. I don't always follow this though.

I duplicate the base twice/three times (depends on) and set the layers to screen and softlight and play around with the opacity. And mostly also various layers filled with solid colour on the top set to multiply, exclusion, colour burn etc.

Curves and levels are all I've known until I started the graphics contest. I'm just getting used to the adjustment layers idea.

I like your Sirius icon very much. And the second one on the bottom row reminds me of the OotP scene with the dementors in the alley.

Very nice, weasleygirl! One thing you could try is to check the anti-alias setting on your text. Make sure it's not set to "none" because the text has a tendency to come out too sharp. I usually set my text on "strong" or "sharp" depending on the font; and if the font is very large I put it on "smooth". That way, the text is blended better. But again, great work!

I'd also use a higher resolution image (as it seems a little blurry), and I'd stay away from the white outline for a while - it's a tricky little bighter to get right.
