Re: Little HP Questions Answered v6

I think the whole basilisk thing is very confusing - we assume that it is confined to it's chamber - otherwise why would the chamber need to be opened...then it moves around using the pipe system. If it is similar to how it is portrayed in the film then the basilisk must have simply been roaming the corridors, otherwise people wouldn't have been petrified.

I think Harry could only hear it talking because it was only talking at those times, it had no reason to before hand, it had no-one to talk to, and no purpose.

The pipes it can go around in must be very large, and therefore that's why it can't get out of anywhere except the chamber opening.

The full weight of everything he had seen that night seemed to fall in upon him as Mrs Weasley held him to her. His mother's face, his father's voice, the sight of Cedric, dead on the ground, all started spinning in his head until he could hardly bear it, until he was screwing up his face against the howl of misery fighting to get out of him

Yes, Harry heard him creeping around in other part of Hogwarts. The pipes are probably a closed system with the mouth of Syltherin as the only opportunity to leave it. My thought.

Weasley Is Our King

I don't know what thread this belongs in, so I thought I'd start one up.

The Slytherins all sing Weasley Is Our King, however as we find out in HBP, there is no such thing as Wizard royalty. Why would the Slytherins call him a King? It seems that is something so Muggle-centric that they wouldn't have anything to do with it.

Ron is the King of letting the Quaffle in; it's a joke little saying. He is like the ruler of letting the Quaffle in for the Slytherins so that Gryffindor loses.

It isn't like the Wizarding World doesn't know about royalty and stuff they just don't have it.

We hardly have Royalty in the United States, but we still use terms like "King" don't we?

And maybe they have had a few hundred years ago - we just don't know. If I remember right, we just now from a few decisions the Ministry of Magic made in the 17th century as the earliest time back (please correct me, if I'm wrong). Still some years where they maybe could have had a king.

And in Book #1, Dean made a banner that said "Potter for President" for the Quidditch match. No president in the wizarding world, no president in Britain. Sometimes words are just used for fun.

The Veil and Harry's Eyes

I've been doing a little research on some concepts in harry Potter trying to dig a little deeper into the meanign of some stuff and I found a few things you might like or disregard.

1) Harry's eyes are emerald greena nd that's always been important. Emeralds were believed to aid weak eyesight and yet harry wears glasses. What is up with that? Harry's sigh is supposed to be his vulnerability.

2)The Veil. A little inspiration on JKR's part perhaps.

'The Veil is the title of an American horror/suspense anthology television series produced in 1958 by Hal Roach Studios.

The series was hosted by Boris Karloff, who also acted in every episode, and was allegedly based upon real-life reports of supernatural happenings and the unexplained. Each episode would begin and end with Karloff standing in front of a sinister-looking, roaring fireplace, inviting viewers to find out what lies behind "the veil."'

Haven't we all wondered what lies behind the veil? Okay 1958 a little before her time but still. The same phrase. It's gotta mean something.

That's all for now but I'll ahve more when I come back.

Your thougts?

Re: The Veil and Harry's Eyes

Emeralds aiding vision... I never would have thought of that!

I think it's obvious that the afterlife lies beyond the veil. The word "beyond" has always been a dramatic word in literature... and one of the last chapters of HP5 is called "Beyond the Veil"! I think the climax of Book 7 will be in the afterlife.

Re: Little HP Questions Answered v6

Do we think that Umbridge had those cauldrons dropped off the back of a broom so Mundungus wouldn't be around when Harry was attacked by the dementors?

When the dementors attack Harry in OotP in Little Whinging, it's when mundungus goes off to see someone about stolen cauldrons and leaves Harry unprotected. We find out later that Umbridge ordered the dementors after Harry, so did she also get mundungus out of the way?

It does, but it's got nothing to do with an obscure fifty year old American TV series!

The veil is a used as a metaphor for death in the Bible.

Since the wizards live in a country with a Queen, you'd assume they'd know about royalty! Wonder if they pay taxes and vote in Muggle elections?

I was thinkng that if the Spiders fear the basalisk it might be because it eats them ? Fifty years ago Hagrid saved his pet and set up fifty years of fresh spiders for the basalisk to eat .

I don't think so. The whole reason for Umbridge being at Hogwarts was to find out what Dumbledore was up to. If she knew Mundungus was there then that means she knew what was going on and what the watch schedule was for Harry in order to know how to lure them away. I think it was just coincidence that it happened that way. They could have just put a spy in the Order of the Phoenix instead of sending someone to Hogwarts to take over and ask questions of everyone. They were expecting something to originate with the school and the students.
