I need to readjust my UEFA rules again, until now I thought Romania had been in when a tie happens in the other match in any case.

If that happens, Romania, Italy and France will have two points all. In direct comparison we got no winner, but Italy and France will have scored more goals in all group matches (since they just have added one each to the one goal every of the three teams achieved until now).
I see: this made a tie between France and Italy, so that... oh, get the next step. That's the weird UEFA coefficient rule, right? Just trying to keep up with things.

Poor Romania, they better score today. Would let me keep some hairs due to not being in the need to go through the levels of UEFA rules anyway.

I actually totally don't understand that rule.

Why would the goal average not count?

Because with that szenario Romania loses for example 0-1 ,Italy and France tie scoring at least one goal:Italy

Romania: 2 points, goal average -1
Italy: 2 points, goal average -3

At least in the webpage they don't make a difference between goals scored and goals received.

Why?

Re: Football: The 2008 UEFA Euro Cup!

The listed rules on that webpage actually speak of scored rules for group phase and goal differences, but the latter applies in direct comparison only.

UEFA RULES a) number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
b) goal difference in the matches among the teams in question;
c) number of goals scored in the matches among the teams in question (if more than two teams finish equal on points);
d) goal difference in all the group matches;
e) number of goals scored in all the group matches;
...

So in case Italy scores, but ties with France, Romania needs to score as well to keep being in the tournament. That's because the goal difference will be the same between Romania and Italy in direct comparison still. There's no rule listening the standing for goals scored and received as important.

It's like gertiekeddle said.
if Italy and France tie 1-1
Italy,2 goals scored and 2 receveid (against Romania and France)
Romania 1
France 1

If Italy and France tie 0-0 then they consider all the goals scored and received.At least it's what they say here everyday...

Re: Football: The 2008 UEFA Euro Cup!

It's confusing due to b) what looks like it meant the total goal difference, but this one is just between the two teams in question. In group C it wouldn't make a difference for the three teams since we're speaking of ties without any goals only.

Ok, ok. This is very confusing indeed.

It basically comes down to that everybody has to cheer for Romania and for France.

This depends on who one wishes to reach the quarters I'm afraid.

Re: Football: The 2008 UEFA Euro Cup!

Oooh, Germany's playing against Austria. I hope Germany wins, they're good
On the other side of the road, I think it's so sad if Austria wins when the Euro Cup is actually played in their country.... But whatever
It would be very much of a surprise, though, if Poland wins and qualifies for the quarter finals... But when will that be? When Austria-Germany is going to be a tie or something?

I am quite amused that the managers both have been send off in the Germany-Austria game

Germany will win. I hate that the matches are like during the day while I'm still in school. My mom's been grump cause she has to tape all the Germany games and the Netherland games too lol :-)

I can't wait to see Germany's game today They're going to win!

A tie would have been enough for Germany to pass, because they won against Poland

That must have been the most interesting part of the game.

My predictions now for the quarters Portugal-Germany: The portuguese players are going to make the germans raw steak.

Re: Football: The 2008 UEFA Euro Cup!

Hmm, CONGRATULATIONS to Germany then- but this match is nothing to be proud of. They have missed at least 5 good goal opportunities and all in all seemed much too chaotic in front of the gate. My only hope for the quarter finals is that they can pull themselves together against Portugal!!!

However, I must CONGRATULATE Ballack for this amasing goal !!! This was really some shooting

Cheers, Harrieta

The Germans will pull themselves together. I think they really really want this.

Hey, anyone know why Hildebrand and Schneider aren't there?

Oh, yeah, that's true...

Well, I thought the match Austria-Germany was a little dull last night... Except for that little thing with the managers/coaches That was pretty interesting

Anyway, I don't really get what has to happen tonight. I mean, if Romania defeats Holland, they qualifie for the quarter finals. But if they lose, they won't, right?
And then Italy has to beat France and... Oh, well, it's going to be pretty interesting this evening, I'm absolutely certain

Coach Löw put them out of the team pre EM. Lehmann, Enke and Adler are the keepers.

I'm actually not a bunch surprised by the low appearance of German team - it's rather exactly like I expected (and was a bit laughed at when I predicted before that it won't be easy for Germany). It had to be a match with less techniques but much team work, although I missed the latter actually.

I'm not worried that Portugal will have an too easy game. We'll see a completely different German team on the field on Thursday.

Sending the coaches to the tribune was completely odd. Did you see how they both high-fived about that the moment they have been sent away? And how they hardly could believe what happened before? Well, Löw didn't say much about it in German TV, but apparently the fourth referee was annoyed by both coaches talking to their teams - from the coaching zone, what actually should be quite firmly within the rules. o_O Maybe we get to hear more about that later.

To the other match, I'm kind of happy that Ivan Klasnic made the one goal for Croatia. He has no good standing in national team still it seems, maybe this will change now.

Re: Football: The 2008 UEFA Euro Cup!

Can I timidly chine in, excuse myself for not finding this thread any earlier, and say that I loved the match Turkey-Czech Republic. Prior to this, I had always rooted for the Czechs, and I was a bit torn this time, because I live in a city with a huge part of Turkish-rooted population, so I think it's a question of neighbour solidarity to support their team, too. The match was so exciting!

Though I'm still sorry for Jan Koller and Petr Czech, they were among my absolute favourite players in the whole competition.

Re: Football: The 2008 UEFA Euro Cup!

Adding a thought to the two sent-off coaches. UEFA will decide about sending-off Löw next match as well today. Löw as also the Austrian coach Hickersberger still are saying they only have done their job, but the fourth referee got too nervous.

Picspam, because it's too funny.

(One minute after having sent off, Jogi Löw explains German chancellor Merkel what happened at VIP tribune).

Re: Football: The 2008 UEFA Euro Cup!

I couldn't believe it that they sent off the coaches. I mean - I'm not a regular football viewer, but I remember clearly to have seen quite a few coaches lose their nerves in time, and totally so. Löw on the other hand seems to me like a quite considerate man, and the Austrian coach didn't strike me like a Hooligan either. I must have missed the scene when they offended the referee, because I really couldn't understand the decision to send them off.

At any rate, I appreciated the handshake between the two coaches after the decision. I really like Jogi Löw for the spirit of sportsmanship he emanates.

Re: Football: The 2008 UEFA Euro Cup!

It seems they really rather got in argument with the fourth referee than with each other, although word has it now that they argued about a foul on Mertesacker first. I hope we get some more information about this today. Guess we will, though, since UEFA will decide about the case today.
