Re: Stephen King

I like Stephen King a lot. IT was a very good book, very freaky. Carrie and The Tommyknockers were great as well! His characters are so well-described and deep it makes them seem very real, especially in IT. I'm looking forward to reading more of his work.

Stephen King was spotted in Alice Springs Australia the other day/week. Just thought I'd mention it

I love that film! I hope people don't mind me saying this but the majority of Stephen King books which have been made into films are pretty bad. In my opinion Secret Window and the Green Mile are probably the only exceptions. Secret Window is based on a short story of Stephen King's called 'Secret Window, Secret Garden'. They changed the end slightly for the film (I don't know why) but apart from that it's quite similar to the book.

I have a twenty year old paperback edition of IT that started as my fathers and gradually went through the whole (extended) family then ended up with me. Every single one of us loved the book but were also freaked out by it. I always new there was something sinister ablout clowns!

Re: Stephen King

I've always had a thing about clowns - they creep me out! Reading IT didn't really help me! That's why I haven't watched the film of IT, the one in the book was scary enough!!

Re: Stephen King

I'm so glad I found this thread!!!!
I read Misery and I loved it! It was very scary andI felt like I was in Paul (the main charcter) head sometimes he described everything so well.
I would recommnd this boojks to someone who has never read a Stephen King novel before because its one of his shortest books and it's great.

Re: Stephen King

My favorite Stephen King book ever, and probably one of my favorite books in general, is Carrie. It's absolutely phenomenal - it's really scary and that's not always my favorite thing ever, (I'm kind of a whimp =p ) but this one really really makes you think - I couldn't put it down, literally!. I sat down to read it at about noon on a Saturday and by the time I got up it was 7:30 at night, I had finished the book, and my lower back ached a lot.

I love that Stephen King said the Death Eaters frightened him! I was there last August when he said it and I almost cried out I was so excited! As Harry Potter fans, we can all sort of puff out our chests there a tad - OUR series scared Stephen King!!!

I don't really understand some of his stories. Has anyone read "For Owen" in his book Skeleton Crew? It's a poem about fruits(or it seems like it).

Re: Stephen King

I really should read more Stephen King books because I think I'd like them. The only one I've read so far is Storm of the Century (I also saw it on TV). Which books do people recommend as being his best?

I would recommend some of the older ones (don't see the movies first because most of them are horrible, and if not horrible, then they change major parts of the books):

Firestarter
The Dead Zone
Carrie
The Shining
The Stand

Re: Stephen King

I'd also check out his short story anthologies like Night Shift, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Everythings Eventual, Different Seasons and (especially) Skeleton Crew. At his best his short stories are better than his novels.

And if you like his stuff, check out Joe Hill, his son. Very much similar in tone to the early King but very much an original.

Re: Stephen King

Stephen King is one of my inspirations, writing-wise. I don't like the excessive gore that he gets into sometimes, but he's excellent at character development, pacing and story structure. I also find his non-fiction prose absolutely hilarious - he's so dry and ironic, I love it!

What I've read so far: Four Past Midnight (which includes 'Secret Window, Secret Garden,' 'The Sun Dog,' 'The Langoliers,' and 'The Library Policeman'), 'Salem's Lot, The Eyes of the Dragon, and The Mist. Not many of the big, universally recognized ones, but I'm working on it. Pet Semetary is the next on my list.

EDIT: Oh, also his book, On Writing. 'Adverbs are not your friends!' -best advice I've ever gotten.

Totally agree with you! Athough I would put 'Carrie' up there too. I hated the end of the book and the film is one of my favorite horror films EVER. Oh and of course 'Misery'. Oh and 'Shining' and 'Green mile' (actually quite a few were good films!!)

My fave Stephen Kings are

'Christine' (TERRIBLE film)
'Shining' (also good film)
'Green mile' (really good film)
'Dolores Claiborne' (OK film)
'Apt pupil' (Not seen the film)
'The girl who loved Tom Gordon' (not made into a film yet!)
'Cujo' (not seen film)
'Thinner' (not seen film)

I did not finish 'Dreamcatcher' 'Pet sematary' and 'firestarter' as they got too stupid towards the end. And I have seen 'IT' but the end is soo bad that I really wanna read the book cause apparently it's better.

Basically I love this man and his books, I bought a load of them cheap at a boot sale about 10 years ago and have still got about 20 to read!!!

Re: Stephen King

I'm a pretty big fan of Stephen King. He has incredible talent as a horror author. I've only read a few of his books (The Shining, Pet Semetary, and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon) but I think they are very good books and always lead to a terrifying adventure for the reader.

The only movie I have seen is "Carrie," and I was pretty impressed with it.

I live about an hour away from Stephen King. I've visited his house before. It's just as spooky as you would imagine.

The film version was laughable.

Well not inside I'm not a stalker. But his house is just located in the middle of a town. It's not set back or anything, so it's as open as any other house.
