Re: Do you prefer the books or the films?

I take account of books' composition to excite my nerves and move onto the next chapter. Films tend to lose originality for sure.

When reading books, you conjure up imaginary items to string together to make a particular theme. Fantasies come alive in your direction. Whatever you conceive word by word exactly emerges into your illusionary concept. Films will transform the theme in another way as per the makers' interest and ideas. However, they do assure the spectators to adore it. But, it doesn't occur so always.

Re: Do you prefer the books or the films?

The books- hands down, no contest! Anyone that says otherwise is not a real Harry Potter fan, IMO

The films thusfar leave too much to be desired and commonly leave out fan favorite moments

SS and CoS came closest to topping their counterparts but they lacked in effects and cinematography as they went for substance over style.

PoA on the other hand had a style over substance approach, and while a very good film was nearly unrecognizable from the book.

Then we have GoF, which was just awful IMO. The dragon chase, the tongue flick, the butchering of the maze task, etc

Finally, we have OotP which while not the worst, turned the longest book (and my fav at the time) into the shortest film...EPIC FAIL

Upcoming Films:

HBP looks quite good from everything we've seen, however there is MUCH that differs from the book so as an adaptation it's hit and miss, some scenes appear very faithful but others weren't even in the book So I'm expecting a very good (but not faithful) film much like PoA

I have a feeling that Deathly Hallows might be the one film that actually surpasses the excellence of the book for me. Since they've decided to split the final book into 2 films () I'm expecting a very faithful adaptation with no unnecessary cuts due to time contraints and such. I also expect them to go for broke on those films in terms of special effects, this is the end...no need to hold back, go out with a BANG!

Not an epic fail at the box office though.

OotP is the second highest grossing HP film after SS/PS.

Great minds think alike.

The books may have some inconsistencies and flaws (nothing's perfect, not even JKR) but the movie adaptations, especially the two latest ones, leave a lot to be desired. They left the reader-turned-viewer dissatisfied.

I'm putting a lot of expectations in the HBP movies, though.

It's the books and no contest. While I approve of some of the casting (Maggie Smith, Emma Watson, Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris) and some of the visuals, all of the films felt like colossal failures to me.

I prefer both.
The movies, IMO, do a pretty good job for getting the main point played out and I like all of them.
The books, well, are always great! I'm re-reading them right now!

I like both, honestly. The movies for when I just want a few laughs, or heart pounding scenes. But I like the books for some nice quiet me time, or when I get into an arguement with my dad about something (he fancies himself a HP expert).

Definatley the books, I much prefer reading the books over again then watching the films over again, although I do love actually seeing it happening than imagining what it would look like.

I think the first movie TSS had visual effects pretty remarkable back in 2001 that got me diverted to it. But, the storyline was simply for kids. One of the factors why Ralph Fiennes (now Voldemort) did not accept a role on this movie when offered even after much persistence. I have read it on another article at random i cannot identify. It was not sufficiently dramatic to attract a vast extent of watchers.

Re: Do you prefer the books or the films?

I dunno...I think that the first two films were really good/staying true to the books then since the third one they have been poor, imo. But all of the books are really good and manage to grip me everytime i read them.

To that I'd say that the book are better than the films. But the films are good also.

That's the tough part about the movies. The books are so long what can they do. I personally think that they could have been less stingy about how long the films were. That way, a bit more from the books could have been shown. I think GOF did pretty well for adapting the book. But OOTP could have been longer to fit more in.

I'm glad they're doing DH in two movies. Hopefully it allows for more to be brought into the films.
But I agree about the books. They grip every time they're read. Even after the seventh or eighth time

Re: Do you prefer the books or the films?

I love both...The books started it all for me, and the changes in the films really don't bother me. I'm grateful that the films are there to begin with, regardless of how the story may change in the adaptation process.

I'd have to say the way Alan Rickman delivers Snape's lines, much better than what I was imagining through reading.

I also loved the graveyard scene in GoF and the way Voldemort moves around. That stuck in my mind when I first watched it.

Re: Is there anything in the movies that you like more than in the books?

Off of memory right now, I liked Lupin's reminiscence with Harry about his parents when Harry was worried about the Dementors.

I can't think of anything the movies did *better* than the books, but at the same time I like to see the movies alternate takes. For example, while I love to imagine calm Dumbledore facing down Voldemort in OotP, the battle between the two in movie OotP was so visceral and exciting I loved it despite being very different from the book, and I loved it for entirely different reasons.
It's great how the movie can embellish parts that would have been dry in the books (an extended Hippogriff flight scene could have been so boring if done badly, but it was gorgeous and uplifting in the movie) or present things in an alternate fashion.

Re: Is there anything in the movies that you like more than in the books?

I think what I like most about the movies is that they make Hogwarts and everything more relateable. The students behave more like we do and its just easier to imagine Hogwarts as just another school that I could have gone to.

While I absolutely love, adore and worship the Hogwarts in the books, you always remember that as much as you may dream about it, you can never be there. The movies let you think that you could be there too

Does that make sense?

Re: Is there anything in the movies that you like more than in the books?

I have to say that I enjoyed how Hogwarts was finally shown to be in POA above all the other films as for me personally, it was the first time that I saw how this magical place looked in my mind when reading the books. It was dark, gothic, mysterious and yet had a certain edge of ' home ' that would welcome you if you let it but at the same time you are a bit cautious about what is actually hiding behind those walls and in those immense and expansive grounds.

That was another thing I loved about POA above the other films. The grounds were large, expansive and riddled with so many nooks and spaces that could hide any amounts of secrets and dangers. Plus, the Whomping Willow was simply great in my mind and a true character in it's own right.

Plus, POA is the only film so far to truly get Quidditch to how I saw it in my mind - fast, furious and unrelenting.
