Torchwood (contains spoilers)

So, I felt to not cause problems for those without BBC 3 or who are in America, I'd create it's own thread for it.

Episodes 1 and 2 were premiered tonight on BBC3, with some lovely nods to Doctor Who. I personally loved it, more mature, more exciting and different. Plus it's got John Barrowman in it.

So, lets get the ball rolling

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

You beat me to it. So, I'll just post my last post in the Who thread here.

Spoiler: show
I completely missed the hand thing, but the whole Time Vortex Residule Energy (henceforth known by me as TVRE) was hardly difficult to miss.

Question though - "The Whole of Time and Space is running through your head - You're gonna burn!" (or something to that effect) is what the Doctor said - So why hasn't Jack burned up yet?

Loved the nod to Star Wars with that trapping device Owen was it? used. (If you aren't getting it watch Revenge of the Sith, there's a part in there where similar effects are used to trap Obi-Wan, Anakin and the Emporer).

Also loved the nod to Boom Town, Jack's lift comes up directly where the TARDIS landed.

Slightly disturbed by the whole exploding rat thing but hey, who cares? it's great viewing. Although I think we're definately looking at a 15 maybe 18 certificate.

Over all, I'd give that 100 minutes a 9er. Some genuine scary moments, but maybe a little too much blood in the squib they used on the porter in the first episode.

Was I the only one who thought that Jack's softened up a tad?

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

I thought it was great, especiaal y all the references ( I only picked up on half the one GH mentioned ). I only caught the first one though, I'm going to watch the second on wednesday.

Only, I thought the whole ending bit of the first one, where she decides to work at Torchwood looked too much like a Doctor/ Rose thing....

Maybe you're right, KK, but what were they supposed to do?

Currently watching Declassified on the website, bit annoyed at the length but hey, don't get everything.

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

I really enjoyed it. It's a lot darker and more adult than Doctor Who but with a 9 o'clock (post water-shed) start time it's to be expected. I think there may be a few disappointed children this morning who were desperate to watch it but either weren't allowed to or wont be allowed after their parents saw the second episode! Wee bit graphic there!!!

I picked up on most of the DW conections I think. My sister was completly bemused by the hand and wanted to know how he got hold of it! Does that mean Jack knows theres a new Doctor in town and if so is he going to recognise him when he undoubtedly turns up at some point? They're definately leading up to that with all the "one day I'll find The Doctor" stuff...

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

Barrowman's said in interviews that that's what Jack's trying to do. That's why he's in Cardiff. So I'd presume he knows there's a new Doc in town.

Can you imagine the conversation he'll have when he finally catches up with the Doc?

Jack: oh, before I forget, I've got your hand here somewhere.
Doctor: Oh thanks.

How d'you think he'll react when he finds out that Rose is alive? (I think he thinks she's dead. Isn't that what the Doctor said?)

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

Absolutely superb. But I've a couple of questions

1) Was that the/a face of Boe when Gwen got to Torchwood we saw in the background

2) Is Captain Jack now a quasi time lord? I'm kind of confused. I'm assuming that the incident he's relating to when he was dead but now can't be killed was the end of the Christopher Ecclestone series when Rose absorbed the time vortex and brought a rake of people back to life?

All in all I really really liked it. Its definitely edgier and much darker then Doctor Who but I think it should be a success, I know I'm going to be watching it anyway. Great acting....and I love Captain Jack.

Hurrah!

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

Spoiler: show
What I don't get is how he's still alive - CE's Doc said that Rose was going to burn up if she stayed in control of time and space for much longer. Now I'm not saying Jack's got that ability, but he's certainly got some form of the Vortex in him. Ah well, by the time the 13th episode airs we may have some clue.

As for the Face of Boe - My eyes are peeled on Tuesday. If you're right, great catch. That gives us an idea as to when and where the Doc'll meet Facein S3. It also gives the impression that Whatshername's Welsh, but she's from London, correct?

Spoiler: show
I'm not too keen on the mortality rate though, there were a lot of bodt freezers in that place that Jack put Suzie's body.

Torchwood is the spin off of Doctor Who. Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who.

Torchwood
and here again

I think it was a face of Boe, just seen very briefly in the background. Hopefully I am right!

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

They did say they had bodies going spare to fake deaths... Ughhh.

Anyway... After re-watching Boom Town a few things came up.

1) The TARDIS didn't land in exactly the same spot. Slightly to the front of where the lift is. However they do discuss the "chameleon circuit" in the TARDIS which was quite interesting.

2) Gwyneth (the person played by Eve Myles (Gwen) in Doctor Who) healed the rift in Cardiff that causes all the odd extraterrestrial behaviour in the city.

I'm sure most of you know that but just in case you didn't... I really want to know if the Gwen/Gwyneth thing has any significance or if it's just another way to tie Torchwood to Doctor Who.

Did anyone else notice the co-worked asking Gwen

"what's the matter...seeing some ghosts?"

thought it was just hilarious.

I watched only part way through due to work so I am really confused as I missed the beginning on how they end up in torchwood. Is it repeated on Tuesday and if so what channel will it be on. I did love the more dark theme running through this episode.

How does Jack have those strange abilities because he was never a time lord but I got the distinct feeling he was in this new spin off. Could this mean that he doctor is no longer alone and that what is about to all kick off is the return of the time lords? This is probably completely rubbish but I have a feeling the time lords will be back in the end.

Could this have something to do with what Boe wanted to tell the Doctor in Doctor Who.

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

OK, reading that Wikipedia page, it's confirmed that the hand is the Doc's, so what was Jack doing out of his placement area on Christmas day?

Tane, there are four Torchwood institues. The one in Cardiff, one in Glasgow, the one in London that was destroyed at the end of Season 2 of Doctor Who, and one that's... err... Somewhere. They lost it. Maybe it fell through the rift?

Jack was brought back to life at the end of Season 1 of Doctor Who by Rose, who used the Time and Space vortex to bring him back. I believe (and I think there's canonic evidence as shown in Episode 2) that Jack still has this energy in him, which means he can't die.

Personally, I loved the scene in Episode 1 in the pizza parlour.

'D'you happen to have any customers under Torchwood?'
<snip>
'Which idiot orders pizza under Torchwood?'

Is Torchwood 4 the Doctor and Tardis?

It'd be good, and it'd probably work as well, but the Doctor didn't seem to know who Torchwood were, did he?

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

I doubt Torchwood 4's the Doc and his TARDIS, last year he didn't have a clue who they were, and the Doctor doesn't cover-up suspicious deaths or collect alien technology.

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

Boy do I feel stupid!
1) I never realised that Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who.
2) I couldn't work out why Jack was so determined to save the hand.
3) Missed nearly all the other Dr Who references!

I managed to miss the beginning because we were trying to get the kids to go to bed without telling them what it was we wanted to watch - sometimes as a parent you have to be so sneaky

Yeah that cracked me up too!

I love the darker, more adult theme of the program - kinda reminds me of the X files. (The second episode of Torchwood borrowed a few things from "Gender Bender" in series one of the X files)

Re: Torchwood (contains spoilers)

Tane, it's repeated either tonight or tommorow at 9 on BBC2, or they're running it all week on BBC3.

I wasn't really paying attention, I was trying to get Portsmouth a fair start in the Premiership at the time. And I missed the pre credit scrawl.

EDIT: Is two episodes too little to go on for a effective movie? Right now I've got a screenplay 5 pages long that starts on FA Cup Final day. Something'll happen at 3 o'clock and we;ll go on from there. No idea what the baddie is, no idea about character development or anything like that, just came up with it last night when I was trying to sleep.
