TMQ107 -- The Ossuaries

Discussion of The Magic Quill #107 -- The Ossuaries by Robbie Fischer.

DOUBLE CHALLENGE

SURVEY: Do some wizards and witches get any formal education after Hogwarts? If so, where? (A) Trade school or on-the-job training only. (B) A magical college tucked away in a major university. (C) Mainly private research. (D) Other—please describe.

CONTEST: Describe a way a wizarding parent might discipline a naughty, wizarding child.

Re: TMQ107 -- The Ossuaries

SURVEY: D) Other: A private tutor. He/she would teach through the fireplace, and that way stay at home whle teaching. Of course that might cost some money...

CONTEST: The parent could transform the child's broomstick/wand/cauldron/favorite toy into something living, possibly a bug or creepy reptile. (easily changed back, of course)

Re: TMQ107 -- The Ossuaries

First of all, I would like to thank the authors for a thouroughly entertaining installment! Maybe when Rigel grows up (again) he could teach history at Hogwarts or some other school. He's really good! I'm so glad that some of my names made it to the story.
I think that there is a university for further education. I read in one of the Mugglenet fanfics about the wizard university; they called it the Moo, short for magic university (mu). I don't know if you can use that. I also believe that Hogwarts and the other schools of Durmstrang and Beauxbatons have graduate programs for older students. I'm sure all 3 schools have wonderful librairies and teachers. There is also on-the-job training; healers and aurors for example. And where do lawyers go for their degree? There must be some sort of college for that.
If a wizard child was really naughty the parent could threaten him/her with shutting the child in a trunk along with a boggart.

Survey: C: Mainly private research...I am reminded of Dumbledore (who seemed to know more than his examiners while still at Hogwarts) and Luna's mother, who did herself in while practicing experimental charms...

Contest: I think wizarding parents use a patented spanking-time charmed paddle from Wizardlings-R-Us. Useful in the raising of any young, mischevious wizard or witch. The paddle, upon activation, will follow the child around, offering a swift swat on the bottom of said miscreant (I mean child) when any attempt at wrongdoing is made. "Wrongdoing", for the paddle at least, is defined by any of the actions found upon the product's licensed "List of Possible Paddling-Inducing Offenses"...or at least something along those lines. I just think the idea of a paddle following a kid around and swatting them any time they try and get into trouble, although possibly alarming, might be funny to see.

survey: A... on-the-job training ... it seems to me more logical...but i´ve to say that private research is also a good choise, my motto is "everything is in the books"

contest: To make his/her pet to constantly repeat him/her in a very serious way why the prank she/he did vas so wrong and how bad the poor victim must be feeling because of it. Obviously the parents do that too, but it has more effect if your owl wakes you up in the middle of the might.

imagination doesn´t come easily
creation requieres hard work

Re: TMQ107 -- The Ossuaries

We have examples of "on the job" in canon, and private research is pretty well implied, but I think any community that cares enough about education to found several large and popular boarding schools would have to have some institutions of higher learning.

As for the naughty wizard brats, I would think a common punishment would be to disenchant all their toys and such, so that the kid would have to "live like a muggle" for a bit. Sort of the wizard's equivilent of taking away phone or TV privileges. This would be especially appropriate for children who try to practice underage magic, abuse their siblings toys, or otherwise misuse a magical object.

Re: TMQ107 -- The Ossuaries

well i think that all are possible as different kinds of jobs require different kind of training, like the Auror and Healer are on the job while teachers and professors probably go to college and Unspeakables would of couse go to private research.. well if i have to choose one then a college would seem a better idea where Hogwarts graduates start to specialise...

As for misbehaving children, i agree with TWZRD that removing their magical powers is a proper punishment for misuse of magic, the parent might use the MagiBANd which is a wristband that when is put on the misbehaved, it will prevent the child from casting magic or using anything magical, so that wearer will have to live a Muggle life until the parent removes the MagiBANd.

another idea is that the parent use The Nag, a speaker that is charmed to follow the child around to continuously nag the child in the parents voice. Save time and breathe for the parents and create hell for the misbehaved...

I'm still here. Between my editor and me, updates to the Magic Quill have been moving slowly lately, but there is another article coming soon...

Re: TMQ107 -- The Ossuaries

By my reckoning we have 1 vote each for A, B, C, and D, plus 2 votes for "all of the above." So I guess that means I get to pick the one I like for both the Contest and the Survey!

I appreciate your contributions. But it's slow "weeks" like this one that drove me to issue the challenge at the end of TMQ #108. More on that another time.

In response to the "where do witches/wizards get their training by blaqlives", definitly A. Why bother with something like college or something or other like that? It is soo muggle like....
