silversneeker, that is encouraging news! You are lucky indeed that the music program at your school seems to be flourishing. My father-in-law is the high school band director at our local school and over the years he has seen a decline in the number of students participating in band despite the fact that the school is quite large.

I am a former band geek myself having played clarinet for 7 years during school. My favorite season of the year was marching band season (football and Mardi Gras parades). My most remembered experiences while in band was marching in the big Mardi Gras parades and also individual tryouts for Honor Band which I was in for 4 years. Great memories . . . thanks for the fun thread. Bank Geeks Unite!!

Re: Band Geeks!

The band my program at my school is enormous!! We have so many people!! It's really amazing, and I abolutely love it. In my marching band alone, which was the Show Band (meaning we played at the football games), we had over 200 members!!! As for the other marching band, I'm not sure of the exact number, but it was well over 100, as well. I can't think of any other school that has 2 Marching Bands. Also, we have 6, yes 6! concert bands. 3 at one campus, 3 at the other. Concert I, II, II are at my school, then at the other is another Concert I, and Symphonic I & II. We also have 4 Jazz bands this year, which I beloeve is the most ever. Previously, we've only had 3, but last year so many people wanted to join, they had to add another. It's probably due to the fact that my school is insanely large, but still, there are some really large schools that don't have such large band programs. I'm really lucky to have such an awesome program!!!

Re: Band Geeks!

I am a total Band Geek. I play the clarinet and I love it!!! My band director is fairly new he's been teaching for only about 4 years and our middle school band got him his first one in festival. We absolutely love our director, Mr Recla. He is amazing and really fun.

Re: Band Geeks!

I'm a band geek, mostly. About a third or so of our band is made of band geeks...I would say. I've met several people through band, auditions, ect, it's almost unbelivable. I friend of mine went to a summer camp with me last year, a music camp, and it was so much fun! Almost everyone there was a band geek, you had to be, otherwise, why were you there? A week of being with complete strangers, and band geeks...that was the most fun I had had in quite a while. I'm definately going back this year!
If you ask me, being a band geek requires dedication, at least where I live. Here, we get up at five o'clock twice or more a week to go practice. That practice also is marching outside, and it only starts when the weather gets cold: October. I play the alto saxophone, and on the first day I almost froze my fingers! Now I wear gloves, and its only gotten colder since. Band geek forever!

Re: Band Geeks!

I am a devoted band geek.
If someone asks me what sports I do, marching band is my answer.
I am totally devoted. I play the clarinet.
To me, being a band geek is all about devotion and pride in the band. Some people are ashamed to wear their marching band shirts to school...tsk, tsk. I go so far as to organize "band shirt fridays" amongst me and my friends.
I love marching band..it's totally the best part, and anyone who says that it's stupid is obviously misinformed. And if you ask me, it only gets better on the "monsoon nights" or during "hurricane Katrina-Rita."
Gotta love our directors sense of humor!

Re: Band Geeks!

OOOH okay I have this "This one time at band camp" story

This one time at Band camp, we were walking over to the stadium to practice. It was one of those Music /Summer Band Camps at Sam Houston and oh my gosh, the guys there (students and instructors alike) were HOT I was walking in front of them and I slipped. I fell flat on my back and slipped a good 3 feet from where I was originally standing. OMG can you say, EMBARRASSING!? It was horrible because I mean all the instructors (which happened to be college guys) saw. I was so red lol but it was funny^^

Re: Band Geeks!

Ahhh the glories of being band geek. Sooo many wonderful stories and fun times with my friends. There was the time my best guy friend "fought" with our other friend over which was better: ninjas or pirates. Ninjas, won obviously!

Well anyways, normally for marching band, i'm in the color guard, but I hope to switch to marching clarient next year. I'm a woodwind player, though i'd like to learn how to play trumpet sometime. One of my best girl friends plays it, and she loves it! I also want to learn flute or sax of any kind, but mainly alto. I really want to expand and be able to play a lot more than just woodwinds. But for right now, clarinets all the way!!!

BAND GEEK PRIDE!!!

Re: Band Geeks!

I love band! I play the snare drum in our marching band, and percussion in the concert band. We only have about 42 kids in our band, but I think that it makes us that much closer. It's much easier to know everyone this way.

I spent most of my day in the band room :P I usually hang out there for about 1/2 hour before school, then there's the actual band class, which is 72 minutes long, then I spend 25 minutes of lunch in there, then today I spent another 72 minutes in the band room (I skipped Biology ) and the last 20 minutes of 5th hour.

I love the people that are in the band. We are so close and have so many jokes together and we just have fun all the time.

Re: Band Geeks!

I played in my high school band. We had loads of fun, and usually a bunch of my friends and I would stay in there during luch, breaks, before classes, and sometimes for up to half an hour after school. And, of course, we were there for our class!

Re: Band Geeks!

I play French Horn for my band, and at our last concert, the first song we played was the Star Wars/Raiders march by John Willams. Our band director came out dressed in full Darth Vader regalia. By the time he had us start playing, we were laughing so hard, we kept hitting the wrong note for the first three measures.

Re: Band Geeks!

I'm a very proud band geek who plays flute (mostly) and I taught myself clarinet and piano this year (although i'm not the greatest) and I'm taking bassoon lessons so we can have two bassoons in our band next year. I'm also very proud to say that the majority of my friends are band geeks also.

The only thing that would make me happier is if we had my band director from freshman year back (I'm a junior now). That band director lead us to state fair marching grand champions and first place in a national marching competition. Band has gone downhill since he left.

Re: Band Geeks!

I'm such a band geek! Last year I was in all 4 bands at my school. This year I'm a senior so I'm only in the top 2. Our band trip last year went to New York City which was AMAZING! And we got a professional clinic with a Broadway director and everything. It was the best!

Re: Band Geeks

Whoaa, no one's posted in here for a loooonggg time.

Are you not proud of being a band geek or something??

Anyways, I've played flute for 4 years now.

My school's marching band had 19 horn players this year, 5 in the pit/ front ensemble/ whatever you want to call it, 5 in the colorguard, 1 (questionable) drum major and NO drum line. Is that frightening or what?? I don't know if we'll even have a marching band next year!!!

But I hope we do . There were three flutes: me, my friend who's never played before, and our section leader, who is a senior who played second flute last year. Our sectionals were the best. Most of the time we practiced marching with everyone else (except the trumpets. At my school, the trumpets are the section that's kind of better than everyone else and they know it... I know that typically it's the flutes, but this year we were basically just the crazies), but ended up playing ninja instead. And complaining about our directors.

And... band camp was awesome. Weird, because it was held on campus and the people from cross-country were there too, but still fun. Small bands are the awesomest!
